John Hyslop is a retired art teacher who loves to paint and take pictures. He stays active by swimming and walking whenever he can. And he’s found a great way to mix art and exercise: he’s made his walks into moving photo shoots.
“I take my camera everywhere,” says the sixty-one year old artist at his downtown studio. “I get all kinds of amazing pictures when I’m walking along Yonge Street or on Queen Street West.”
John also likes to get out of the city and walk in the countryside. Bancroft, Algonquin Park and Courtice are some of his favourite places. “I love nature,” he says. “The fresh air, the plants and animals. I’ve seen hawks and deer, and even a coyote! There are so many things to discover. Every hike is a new adventure.”
Of course, he takes his camera with him: “I’ve been taking pictures since my twenties and I still love it. It’s my way of being an explorer.”
Walking in your neighbourhood is a great way to discover people and places that can help you stay active while having lots of fun.
John has another tip for staying active: “Leave the car at home! I walk whenever I can. I take the bus and subway. It’s good for the environment. I save money on parking and gas, and walking to my next appointment is a great way to get some exercise when I’m busy.”
Swimming, walking and hiking help Hyslop stay healthy. “I have diabetes and it’s important to exercise.” He’s also gotten his friends to join him: “Instead of just meeting for lunch, we go for a walk after we eat. It’s a great way to keep on talking and a fun way to burn off some calories.”
Like so many older Ontarians, Hyslop is staying active and having fun. He’s made activities he loves a part of his everyday life. He’s also enjoying the many sights of Ontario and sharing them with others through his art and photography. Talk about painting a great picture!
