An analysis of historical and trend information on physical activity in Ontario

For over 25 years, the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute has been monitoring the physical activity levels of Canadians, as well as the factors associated with physical activity. Although this national data has been published extensively (see www.cflri.ca), fewer details have been available specifically for Ontario residents. The purpose of these slides is to provide detailed historical data on why Ontarians are and are not physically active. The Institute examined historical survey data from its Physical Activity Monitors and from other national surveys such Statistic Canada's Canadian Community Health Surveys and National Population Health Surveys and prepared a set of slides that summarizes:

  • an analyses of historical physical activity patterns in Ontario;
  • specific historical trends with special emphasis on children and youth, women, older adults, and other specific sub-populations that are deemed important to the Government of Ontario's ACTIVE2010 strategy.
