Provincial Recreation Organizations

Provincial Recreation Organizations (PROs) are non-profit incorporated organizations with a mandate to provide recreation programs and/or leadership and skills training for the recreation sector.

PROs provide a wide range of recreation opportunities throughout the province. They ensure that recreation activities and programs are available at reasonable cost, physically accessible to all, environmentally friendly, safe, cost effective and meet the needs of Ontarians. PROs have a history of assisting the ministry to deliver its priorities.

The ministry's core business for recreation is:

"Encourage involvement in sport, recreation and physical activity for the health, social and economic benefits of Ontarians and the communities in which they live."

The Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport provides strategic advice, consultation and limited financial assistance for provincial recreation organizations. In addition to providing consultation the Ministry enters into strategic partnerships with PRO's to improve the quality of recreation, physical activity and sport across the province.

The Ministry consults with PROs regarding recreation projects an organization wishes to undertake. Non-financial assistance is available and limited financial assistance may be available through the Recreation Development Fund (RDF). Applications for financial assistance must clearly demonstrate how the project will assist the Ministry to meet its core business. Applications for ongoing operational support will not be accepted.
