The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has invested in several injury prevention initiatives since the Injury Prevention Strategy’s inception.
In the second year of the Injury Prevention Strategy, the ministry provided funding towards the following initiatives in 2008-09:
Effective January 1, 2009, the ministry is supporting injury prevention through the new Prevention of Injury and Substance Misuse standard which is delivered through all 36 Public Health Units.
The goal of this new public health standard is to reduce the frequency, severity, and impact of preventable injury and of substance misuse. Program services are provided to the community at large, seniors, children and youth, schools and related organizations, and workplaces to prevent injuries and substance misuse in individuals of all ages.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care contributed $400,000 for the ThinkFirst Foundation of Canada to work with public health units and community sport and recreation partners toprovide free sport and recreational helmets to children in need, and to develop and distribute promotional and communications materials. This helmet fitting card was one of the materials that accompanied the helmet fitting clinics.
Safe Communities Canada's Community-Based Injury Prevention Mobilization Initiative to pilot Safe Communities grass roots injury prevention model in five Ontario communities experiencing high rates of injury.

Safe Kids Canada's Ontario Children's Rural Safety Program to increase public awareness of age-appropriate farming activities, tractor related injuries and other injury prevention organizations related to farm safety, child proofing and car seat use.
