MINISTER'S MESSAGE

As the first Minister of Health Promotion, I welcome the opportunity to help improve our population's health and well-being.

I was honoured when Premier McGuinty asked me to create a new ministry for Health Promotion.

Health care is a top priority of this government, and we have already made great strides in the first two years of our mandate to improve the system.

So, why do we need a Ministry of Health Promotion?

All one has to do is look at the staggering statistics on obesity and physical inactivity in this province, and the answer becomes clear.

Health care funding now consumes 46 per cent of the provincial budget.

Ten years ago, health care consumed only 33 per cent of the budget.

If we are serious about ensuring a stable and prosperous future for this province, then we must focus on the prevention of illness through the promotion of healthy living.

For far too many years, we have put too much emphasis on treating sickness instead of promoting wellness.

My job is to ensure that fewer patients end up requiring the services of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

Preventing illness and injury is smart -- it's good for businesses, it's good for taxpayers and it's good for Ontario.
